Mother’s Day Writings

May 10, 2020 By Doris Stensland

On this Mother’s Day, am sharing some writings about Mothers:  “A Mother’s Arms” (written 2013) and two in On The Back Step: “What Is A Mother?” and “Mother Love”

           Mother’s Arms
There’s something about being hugged with a mother’s arms,
     like nothing else.
It provides relief, comfort and love.
A mother’s hug has the same meaning in any language or culture.
It can say many things:
     “I love you.”
“I know you can do it!”  (encouragement)
     “I’m proud of you.”  (congratulations)
     “I understand.”
But the message most sought after from a mother’s arms is,
“There.  There.  It’s all right.  I’m here.”
A Mother’s arms carry the same message as our Heavenly Father when He enfolds us
In His everlasting arms of love.  It’s the assurance that everything is going to be OK, and
that He’s there for us.
As years go by, I have found that a time comes when roles are reversed and a mother
becomes the recipient of these hugs and “I love yous” from her children, grandchildren
and great- grandchildren.  These are times when we all are blessed as our Heavenly
Father enfolds His everlasting arms of love around us all.
“The eternal  God is my refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Deuteronomy 33:27
By Doris Stensland – December, 2013

       MOTHER   LOVE
It started out so simply
with a tiny baby in her arms,
         and diapers,
         two o’clock feedings
         and lullabies.
As her child grew, this love grew,
and she gave of herself  ——
her lap was claimed by this little fellow,
her kisses served as medication for both
              heart and body hurts,
her time was not her own.
She didn’t know how binding this tie had become
     until he reached boyhood
And she found this life was part of herself ………..
she felt pain at his pain,
         joy at his happiness,
         grief at his disobedience.
Then it was time for him to walk alone
and she showed him what he could be:
         her encouragement boosted him upward,
her prayers guided and strengthened him,
her faith in him never faltered.
Now he is a man
and her love has become a magnet
     with an invisible hold
         that neither party can break.
Her love and prayers will follow her child
     even after she is gone.
         – for a mother’s love and influence have no end!

         WHAT IS A MOTHER?
A mother is a potter, molding a piece of human clay
A mother is an artist, trying to bring out on living
     canvas a useful happy personality.
A mother is a physician, whose most effective medication
is her kisses (used for both heart and body wounds.)
A mother is a teacher, teaching right from wrong,……..
     cleanliness, – responsibility – God.
A mother is a model, showing in real life how to live.
A mother is a dietitian, laundress, seamstress, nurse,
     cheerleader and referee.
A mother is God’s hand.  He loves and cares for His
     little ones through mothers.
For all this she is paid – not in money,
but by the love in her children’s hearts
and the pride in their becoming happy, useful persons
     and walking with her God.
