Christmas without a song? We can’t even imagine it. We hum and sing as we go about our work for this Christmas joy is in our hearts. We rejoice at the glorious message of the Savior’s birth in a manger and the wondrous love of God. We cannot keep the melody within.
The first Christmas song was sung by the angels – “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!” The shepherds heard it, and learned it, and soon spread it in their community. Angels had sung the joys of Christmas into the hearts of these fearful shepherds and their lives had been transformed. All who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them and the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard. When the reality and truth of the message is grasped in the hearts, it must be shared. And down through the years it has been. Now, at this Christmastime, these Christmas songs of praise will be sung in hundreds of languages throughout the whole world.
Christmas is a time to praise the wonderful works of God. We certainly have something to sing about. Nothing delights the heart of God like our songs of praise. Let us then join in the Christmas songs and as we sing praises with our lips we will brighten the fearful, joyless hearts of those we meet along the way.
